Hi everyone - yesterday was the first time I have had a steriod injection from my GP. I have been having a flare up which has lasted several weeks and my appointment to see my new RA Consultant (I asked to change Consultants) won't be until May - in desperation I asked my GP to bring my appointment forward privately. He suggested that I have a steriod injection to see how I get on and that it should kick in within 2 weeks. If I have no signs of improvement I am to ring the surgery and ask to speak to him directly and he will make the referral. After all that - can anyone tell me if they have had this injection and how did they find it (did it work) We are going on holiday in 2 weeks with our daughter her husband and our 10 month grandaughter and I would so love to be able to get around - any advice

Hi Jane,
I have had these injections several times. A few people find they don't help much but for the majority of us they are excellent.
You need to rest as much as possible for a couple of days to let it get into your system and you should then find that your pain and inflammation are much improved. With me they last around 6 to 8 weeks,others find the effect wears off more quickly but we are all different in the way we react to drugs.
I hope you soon find you are feeling much better and can enjoy your holiday.
Just a word of warning.....even though the injection will help you feel much improved, remember you should still pace yourself and resist the temptation do too much while you are feeling good!

Sounds like you've had some really good advice there. Just want to add that once when I was having real problems whilst waiting for a drug to start working, I also spoke to my G.P., who contacted my rheumy nurse to find out about the dose to give and where to inject for the best results. When this unfortunatly did not work, he then spoke to her again and I was then put on a low dose of prednisolone (a steroid) for a short time. It might be worth asking if the inj does not work and you want to get about on holiday. Hopefully all will be honky dory and you will have a brill time! Zena x.

Hi Jane I have only ever had one depomedrone and despite complete rest for 2/3 days it didn't work at all! That said oral steroids (prednisolone) work well with me and a high dose initially followed by a lower maintenance dose does the trick. As Doreen says, be careful not to overdo things whilst feeling well; the meds are simply masking the symptoms and not improving the condition. Hi Jane,
The first one I had did not work, but I have had another two since which did. When I mentioned this to the nurse, she said to think of the steriod injection like a sponge, it can only soak up so much inflamation before it is full. This made sense to me as the first one I had was on diagnosis and inflamation levels were high, so no relief. Hope yours works for you, because when they do the relief is fantastic.

Hi Jane,
Had one at the beginning of Feb, took about a week to fully kick in, went on holiday for 2 weeks and still feel fab. I know I should be pacing myself but I am bad and making the most of it. I just can't help myself, could somebody please make me grow up!!!

hi Jane,
i've had about 5 or 6 ( not had one since last May though ) and all but two worked well for me,
mine kick in almost straight away if they're going to work and last a good 6 weeks.
i agree you should rest up after having it done.
the last two i had i came out in a few hives as soon as they had been done, but they went as quickly as they came .. think that is unusal to happen though.

Hello Jane,
Sounds like your Doc is on your case so well done for that. Yes I have 5 or 6 depo steriod injections.
Usually work within a week, however had one 2 weeks ago today and I noticed an improvement within
48 hours. I know they mask the symptoms but hey they definately improve your well being.
Go for it and have a great holiday

The first injection I ever had was brilliant. It was instant relief :-) I've had several others since then and most of them have given me some relief. Hope yours does some good and that you feel well enough to enjoy your holiday.

hello jane, i have had depo's as well and find them ok for me, i went abroad and boy it hurt alot i suffered for it, painkillers didnt touch how i was feeling, but when i told my consultant he advised if i was traveling a distance to have one at least a week before, it was the best advice, i do rest up before i go away and as said still remember to pace yourself i didnt the first time,i felt so good and full of energy,did come down with a bump and wont be doing that again,your call,have a good break,dorothy

Hi Everyone - just to say thank you all so much for the advice about steriod injections. It has been 5 days since I had my injection and already I feel sooo much better, I am very much aware of what you have said about not overdoing it and have made sure that I stick to that advice. Thank you all once again - I am now looking forward to enjoying a holiday with my family and having fun with our little grandaughter!!
